STROKE OF MIDNIGHT
Although the Masquerade is being held on the night of the Fourteenth, some new problems arise in the days after. This log is split into two sections, the Masquerade and Around Town. Everyone is free to participate in either or both, whichever catches your interest.
More details on everything can be found here and here. As a reminder, events double as our TDMs and information can be found here with arrival details here. Any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in February and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of February 14 through 28. TDM only characters can only thread within this log. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count February as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.
IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.
TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open Wednesday, February 22nd and Applications will open on March 1. Our next cycle after won't be until JULY.

I. MASQUERADE

It's time for the masquerade and the carriages will start arriving before sunset. Upon arrival, everyone who leaves the carriage (or mercilessly spat out if they try to resist) will be greeted by fairy godmothers with an eye for the most dramatic and extravagant fashion. It's a masquerade, after all! For those who already arrive with their outfits, the fairy godmothers may add a little embellishment here and or just change it completely if they think it could look better. For those who did not, they will create a whole new outfit that would fit the wearer perfectly—with magic of course. They will also create the masks and half of the glass slipper brooch that everyone will wear. The masks are enchanted so that regardless of obvious personality or physical traits, they are somehow unrecognizable at first. While it is possible to figure it out through interaction, or if it's someone they already know well, it's more likely they need to reveal their identity first. These outfits can be kept even after the masquerade is over.
A. Get in the Carriage. As the pegasus drawn carriages begin to arrive to transport those who have decided to attend the masquerade, there is some commotion from others. The pair of coach mice—who are only about four feet tall—can be found smiling and cheerily squeaking about the masquerade as they grab and literally throw protesting individuals into the carriage, whereupon the door will immediately shut behind them. Ho ho ho, it'll be such a grand time! Will anyone try to help the poor soul? Or perhaps help the mice? Maybe you're a struggling victim instead. Should anyone want to try and drive the carriage, they might have a chance…but good luck having the pegasi listen to them. Eventually the carriage will land and take them to the front of the castle where the masquerade is hosted.

D. Royal Banquet. There are numerous tables one can use and be served an assortment of foods. In fact, one could make special requests and somehow the dragons serving will be able to make it, or at least as close as possible. One just has to imprint the idea of the dish onto a special card that the chefs will use to recreate it. There are also two bowls filled with special tear drop chocolates, one with only white, pink, and red, and the other filled with the other colors. The "game" is to randomly choose one from each bowl and share a kiss depending on what is picked.

- Extravagant mazes that one could easily get lost in are common, but what's special about these gardens is that the flowers will emit a soft, sweet scent that will feel as if they are walking through a dream. In fact, the section they are going through will begin to change to look like a place from their world and must now find their way out. When this change happens, only those who are in the area will be affected and no one else can enter the area until the main person affected gets out. Those inside can help, and there are no threats—it's all in simple fun…unless the place evokes certain memories and emotions for the person. Might not be as fun for them, then.
- A crystal greenhouse where the temperature is perfectly warm (or cold!) and houses various different flowers. Here some may recognize flowers from their world, the scents also creating nostalgia. There are instructions left that indicate anyone can try to help grow the flowers. The key ingredient will be dreamotion energy, and should they succeed in creating a blossom, a small marble containing a symbol of their home. There are also special daisies that can be used to play the "they love me they love me not" game. If the last petal is "they love me," then become extra flirty and clingy. If it's "love me not," they become angry, jealous, and possessive. The effects only last for a short time…unless they keep plucking flowers.
- The white fountain in the center of the gardens will have a bit of a musical playful side. It will splash colorful water at any who pass by, chime-like notes playing out as it does. But if one were to drop a flower that has absorbed positive dreamotion into its water, it will calm and let people sit to look and relax. There is also a strange frog wearing a crown that claims to be a prince. For those who believe its words that a kiss will free him from the curse, they will be sorely disappointed as nothing happens and the frog just laughs and hops away.
II. AROUND TOWN

- Insightful Mockingbirds. Special mockingbirds are flying around and perch on random shoulders. They have the ability to "read" a person's thoughts and repeat them out loud. Without warning. Hope there aren't any secrets because that bird is going to make it public, especially if it's an observation or thought—good or bad—about another person. Good luck shooing it away, too—it'll stick around for a while because it might enjoy sowing this bit of chaos.
- Arrow Delivery. The group from last year have decided to use their prank arrows for good and start a business in delivering special Valentine's messages via arrow. A "shot to the heart" in the less literal sense this time! While some of their archers are skilled, others are…less so. Some are hitting a bit too close to comfort or way off the mark. Some messages are going to the wrong person entirely. Help avoid, retrieve, or even deliver these messages around town.
C. Candy Kisses. A special assortment of flat bottomed, tear shaped chocolates are currently selling like hotcakes and can be found practically everywhere. Their main selling point is they come in different colors and each color has a special effect that will make the eater want to kiss the person near them in a certain way (see chart). Some people are deliberately swapping the wrappers around, so be careful!

But the dreamlike fog within his mind took hold again. Perhaps it's because seeing a civilian awake during the Dark Hour set off every alarm bell of danger within Shinjiro's mind. It made him prioritize looking around for Shadows, prepared to strike it before it would try and devour this man's mind, turn him into one of the Lost.
"There aint really time to explain," Shinjiro told him, his expression tight. "We gotta get inside somewhere - you're not safe out here."
(( ooc: sorry about the wait! thank you very much for your patience with me ))
no subject
When Shinjiro talks again, looking at him, he feels a little pit to his stomach. He's met many people over his life as a police officer, but that look is something else. He almost wants to believe him, that it would be safer to just get away, but his brain quickly catches up - it's not the BOTH of them that need to get out, but just him specifically.
New plan. Maybe they need to ride the wave for it to be over. Worth a try at this point. Besides, his own ego has trouble having others trying to protect him instead of the opposite after all that happened.
"I'm fine." He looks back at him with as a serious look as he can muster. "Whatever is happening, I'll be able to help. Even if it is magical in nature. I have some experience with that."
[OOC: Don't worry about it!]
no subject
No, what he saw instead was another adult thinking he knew best, writing him off as a punk. Which, admittedly, was fair - Shinjiro didn't think anyone should have grounds to trust him. It made it all the more frustrating, because there was real danger, and no matter how far a stick could've made its way up this adult's ass (and maybe he was a cop? Shinjiro thought he knew a cop when he saw one) he needed to try and get him to believe him anyway.
"You don't have any way to face what's coming, and I do." Shinjiro told him, wishing he was - someone else, frankly. Someone more persuasive. Someone less disreputable-looking. But what else was new? Wishing that never changed it.
There's something dark moving nearby that he saw - like living ooze, crawling with too many arms, keeping just out of sight. Hoping to ambush them. "Shit. We gotta go now."
Perhaps he could reach for this guy's arm and drag him ... away from the Shadow was a good start, they could work on more specifics later.
no subject
Then it all clicks.
There were other clues already laid bare - most people he had met didn't know the little details of his world. It was the first time being in someone else's world...memories...that he recognized the location, albeit barely and in part due to a scandal, but still a connection.
When he also spots the moving thing nearby as well, it seems to confirm his hypothesis. Besides, it would be single-minded to think that only the Phantom Thieves existed when it came to Persona users. Zenkichi had wondered it too, for the brief weeks that he was with them. Could there be others? And while it didn't look the same as the creatures he had fought, the overall aspect of it felt somehow familiar.
If this was just a memory or real, either way he'd take it head-on instead of trying to get away. Sorry, kid.
"I'll be fine," he insists, a little softer as he sees the other going to grab his arm, "despite my age.". He wants to say 'I have a power like yours' but what if he's wrong? What if this isn't the same thing at all? His detective background makes him know he can't prove it quite yet right now even if it seems to scream that it is. Better just come out with it and see what happens. Either way, the guy is right; something is coming.
He takes a step forward, and in a burst of bluish flames, his outfit changes, replaced by a far more ridiculous one looking more like he should be an extra in a movie than fighting.
It's what comes next, however, that's far more telling.
"Valjean!"
The Persona seemingly appears rising from the ground to finally hover behind him, easily towering twice his height. Raising its caged and chained arms, it sends out spheres of light that beam down upon the creature. Megidolaon.
....he just hopes that this isn't some sort of illusion meaning he's destroying someone's property.
no subject
Shinjiro thought that was the best way to summarize the entire situation. What was - that fire? That outfit? The mask looked ridiculous. Where the hell was this guy’s Evoker? Because the only, only thing that made sense out of this entire thing was the Persona that emerged. Despite it being one he’d never seen before - their leader seemed to pull out new ones all the time, so unfamiliarity didn’t phase him.
That spell, though, holy shit. Shinjiro hadn’t seen anything that powerful yet, and
since the Shadows were from his own memoriesit more or less vaporized the Persona. Like hitting the weak little guys on the first few floors of Tartarus. He can’t say he felt sorry for the Shadow at all, though, why would he.Given the power of Valjean and Wolf, Shinjiro could hear some of the nearby Shadows becoming distressed and fleeing. Good, good. But then he saw one of them that just didn’t get the message - it became an hourglass as it rose out of the ground, menacing them -
Shinjiro didn’t hesitate, pulling his Evoker from his costume. No matter how much he hated this power, he didn’t even think about failing to use it to protect this strange (very strange) adult. “Castor!”
The Evoker looked like a gun. When it fired, it sound more as if it was shattering glass, and while Shinjiro’s head shook from the blow, there was no wound, there was no exit for whatever passed through.
Instead, rising above, a huge figure, like a man on top of a skeletal horse, materialized. It was as big as Valjean, and its terrible eyes glowed before it had the Shadow meet a Fatal End. Not perhaps as flashy - but it got the job done. That was its weak point.
“All right -“ could Shinjiro count on this guy to help? He cracked his knuckles anyway … the enemy was down. “Let’s do this.”
no subject
...in a quick second.
But first; a series of panicked screams for a guy who didn't know evokers existed.
"Hey wait, don't---"
Even if his own Persona and feelings were 'this is fine' his brain and his police background nearly made him rush over the other and wriggle the gun out of his hands. Thankfully, he was too slow and paralyzed in surprise to act fast enough and he heard the glass shatter and a hell of a Persona spring forth. Thankfully the Phantom Thieves had a true menagerie of creatures including a ridable bike, so a guy with muscles bigger than his head riding a one legged horse seemed to almost fit right in next to the ship riding skeleton or the puffy lady that had gigantic guns under her skirt.
He had to be briefly angry from the panic that had gripped his heart before they got down to it.
"What the hell, kid?"
That seemed to provide a question for everything. He shook his own head and sighed.
"You know what, I'll just figure this out once this thing's gone. Let's finish this!"
A sword appeared in one hand, comically as long as his entire body. He then nodded to Shinjiro, as he took with a surprising amount of agility, speed and jumping prowess.
no subject
So - this guy knew about the power of Persona, but not Evokers. That made more sense than him knowing what an Evoker was and not using it. Maybe it's because they were invented by the Kirijo Group? Did some other group of assholes research Persona and ... come up with magical girl costume technology to summon them instead? So many questions he's not even sure it's worth caring about.
Later, though, they had more important shit to take care of first. Shinjiro pulled out a massive axe and ran in after him. The teen wasn't as quick, but his blows were powerful, and he didn't merely swing his weapon around. He kicked. He punched. He even used his head to slam it into the enemy. Given how
overleveled Wolf waspowerful they were, it easily destroyed the shadow, having its remains dissolve into black miasma before disappearing.Shinjiro put the axe on his shoulder and looked at the older man, appraising him. The first thing he asked, unable to stop himself, was; "Why the outfit?"
no subject
"It just happened when I first summoned my persona. Honestly I thought I was losing my marbles at first, even after all I had seen."
See? Perfectly logical. If you're Wolf.
"I know the Phantom Thieves told me it had something to do with being perceived as a threat by a jail ruler. Which...I'm pretty sure what I just said sounds like nothing you know." He looked at Shinjiro to see if he was following because he had this inking of an idea that this was not the same, considering what he had just seen. "Believe me, I know that feeling. I've been there. More than once."
Some things didn't seem to change t least - Persona were mostly huge and packed a punch, and enemies on the ground meant you could kick the shit out of them to finish them off.
"Maybe we should clean the area and see if there's anything left before we talk. And figure out a way to get out--" he stops, a sudden realization. An idea. "Hey...what year is it? I noticed some of the company logos around here are old school." And he hadn't really had a time to see if there was a magazine somewhere with a proper date.
no subject
Even if he was supposed to be dead. Honestly, it's Shinjiro who felt like he's owed an explanation.
"Phantom Thieves?" Shinjiro muttered, less a question, more confirming they weren't just not on the same page - they seemed to be reading from entirely different books. He confirmed with a nod, "Yeah. Nothing like what I know."
"You want to know what year it is," Shinjiro said bluntly. Like they're in a time travel film? He snorted. "Sure. It's 2009."
And he should be dead. Maybe time travel didn't seem to far fetched. "There's no getting out - we just got to wait until the Dark Hour ends. You - from the past, or the future? You've got a Persona - you'd be aware of the Dark Hour already if you've been around the last ten years."
Well, since he was awakened to it. Before then, he might not have, or barely remembered it.
500 years later
"Future," he explains with a small sigh, touching his hat and giving him a date that's not mentioned in Persona 5 but is probably around 2021. "I don't know anything about the Dark Hour, sorry. We don't...deal with that kind of thing. We went into people's Jails, inside their minds. I'm sure that sounds as strange to you as the Dark Hour does to me. But the point is, with both have Persona. And since this is your...dreamscape? Memories? Who knows at this point. Whatever it is, it's not normal. Well, as normal as the Dark Hour should be, if you catch me drift."
no subject
Shit. That meant that they did it. They got rid of it after all. Shinjiro felt a firm sense of pride and satisfaction from that. They must have gotten rid of the other full moon Shadows after he - (a memory niggled at him, trying to break through the fog of the illusion which trapped Shinjiro. Grief, anger, a carriage ride, talking to -)
Wolf's words yanked even harder on that veil of illusion around Shinjiro's mind. He scowled and shook his head. "What are you talking about? Dreamscape? I'd - none of this fucking makes sense. I died."
That part was fine. Being apparently alive now, the stupid outfit he's wearing, this guy from the future - "I'm dreaming?"
